Proton coupe Build

Postby mrvec » Thu Nov 05, 2009 6:45 pm

This builds been going on for a bit now but seeing as evocoupe.net refuses to allow me to post progress on there i now have a build thread here
thanks MPF :D
BTW this is a street driveable track build(i dont have a transporter or tow car atm)

my previous build hit the side of a hill and got screwed basically :depressed: :(
so this build is no frills and not very pretty.(see front bar thread aye RPWmirage lol)

i picked up this replacement M21 coupe

Image

Image
rear fogs already removed in this pic

the proton has been stripped out and had the 93 removed and relaced with the 92 mivec drivetrain from the previous car
also changed the entire wiring loom and dash(wiring loom has been stripped of all unneccessary wires/connectors,(eg only wire for electric windows going into each door))

on the removed list is;
central locking
electric mirrors
abs
air conditioning
all heater ducting except demister
interior panels,still have door cards
one boot spring and mount
fuel door popper relocated to in boot
boot popper
rear seats and belts
brake backing plates
lower half of dash
all sound deadening
centre console
gearshift mounting is lightened
intake manifold braces(replaced lower one with alloy)

not sure what the current weight is id assume 900-950kgs

Image
engine spec is 4g92 mivec rebuilt with arp head studs and rod bolts, port match and polish,65mm throttle body, pod filter, chipped ecu and camfc fuel controller
reground cams and adjustable gears,4-1 headers,2,1/4" exhaust no cat, cannon muffler

this setup is not tuned at present so not sure of power its making(not alot i think)

Image.

Strut braces
Image

Image

after adding the new rims (advanti copies of racing hart cp035s)11kg per corner so nice and light
and removing the proton bonnet, grill, rear spoiler
dobisport lowering springs on stock m21 shocks are current suspension and will be replaced asap
Brakes are the stock m21s with bendix ultimate front pads, slotted rotors all round sometime in the future

Image

Image

rear lights have had the orange indicator tint bit removed so next was the fronts and adding bonnet pins
as the proton and mitsi bonnets latch slightly differently

Image

next was the front bar being chopped up to block off the section of airdam not being used by the half width radiator

Image

i also got chop happy with the rear bar not sure how to finish dealing with this yet so it looks like arse

Image

last 1/4 mile effort was a 14.565 at 93.2
next on the agenda are a track day and a circut sprint which is what i want to use the car for mainly

a few bits i have made or lightened

Image

Alloy under drive pulley for alternator not sure how much the reduction is but it hasnt caused any issues so all good

Image

coil mounting plate looked on the heavy side so its been trimmed
also have made a new alternator adjustment bracket from alloy which weighs a fraction of the stock one
(weight reduction has become a hobby for me lol, every little counts)

Image

picked up a 4wd fuel tank for free so i will be re routing the exhaust to straight down the centre of the car soon

on the to do list is;
a fixed back bucket seat
alloy wheel nuts
decent shock and spring combo
relocate battery and put airbox in its place(dry cell replacement battery)
light door cards
alloy wheelnuts
lighten the bejesus out of any little thing i can think of without affecting the cars structure
add a roll cage if i need it to get into events

weighed today at scrap metal yard=915kgs with 1/2 tank of gas and spare rim(no jack or tools)
new seats should knock that down to closer to 900 :)

Edit -2018lbs nearly under the magic 2000

4wd tank in after an argument with the exhaust and a hanger mount(mr angle grinder settled the issue)
also had to make up a loom section to get it working(the evo in the other garage helps to figure this out)
Image
i now have a nice straight route for the exhaust to follow :)

also removed a few more surplus brackets and bits to help with weight reduction, the shorter exhaust should weigh less also and hopefully not be any louder

the tail pipe ended up like this (needs the rear hanger remade a bit neater) and a coat of heatproof paint
Image

i had amy day at a street car challenge(1/4 miles,go to whoa, and 2 circut sprints)cut short by losing a clip that holds the shifter cables to the gearbox
i thought for a start that the box was destroyed and promptly pulled out of the event.
when i got it home and had a look i found the clip was the only issue thankfully

I have suspected the cusco lsd wasnt doing its thing ever since it was installed,so i pulled it out and and discovered that it had been setup as a 1 way and in the box backwards(not pleased)lucky that a bit of a study of the cusco catalog gave me the info to pull the centre from the diff and re install it the desired way(1.5 way)
I got the box back in and now have the lsd working correctly,i havnt really given it a work out yet but on more than about half lock it scrubs a front tyre under acceleration.

I also picked up a fixed back seat which way nicer to drive in but makes getting in/out a little tricky.
easy to install as it bolted onto stock recaro rails

the battery died which has sped up the arrival of a dry cell replacement which will reside behind the passenger seat
Image
brackets and cables all sorted just needs to be bolted to the floor
this also gives a nice big hole to construct a decent air box for the pod filter

airbox has ended up like this so far just needs a lid made up and a splash of paint
also had to relocate the fusebox hard up against the strut tower to get the shape i wanted
the intake pipe on the other hand needs a more permanent fix than the plastic tube jammed into the stock intake pipe that i threw together while making the box
the problem here is the 4"to 3" drop in diameter (hope to find a fix asap)

im pretty happy with this end result for the airbox as it also tidys the engine bay up.
this would have to be the best the engine bay has looked ever :) even with the whorey intake pipe

the whole job was pretty sraightforward,I used two oem starter cables joined together to get power to the starter and an old amp cable to get power to the fusebox.
the holes to mount the stock battery tray are ideal for mounting a new airbox and the intake air comes from the inner guard/behind front bumper which gives a nice cold air supply from the foglight opening in the front bar

I'm going to leave the top of the box open on mine to suck cold air from the open vent on my EVO 1 hood/bonnet. I'll use water pipe insulation to seal the box from the engine bay.

i had issues with the factory wheel nuts being to short (burred a couple of them) so an upgrade to longer anodised aloy nuts got the nod.
they come in at a total of about 80g lighter than the steel nuts lol
a couple of comparison shots
Image
Image
not sure if i like how they look but they are a helluva lot easier to get a wheel brace on

Have had a weee bit of a change last week as the muffler basically destructed on me (strangely enough this caused a fault code relating to map sensor which disappeared after muffler was replaced),i swapped out the muffler for a different style which should be giving better flow, its also made the exhaust note a little louder and harsher.
should hopefully have gained a fraction more Hp from the change.

Also had a itch to change something (experiment a little)so this arvo i set to with this wee job
Image
should have a pic of the result tomorow not too sure how this will turn out yet
i have tried to fade the green out as the bonnet curves down at the front and followed the body line of the bonnet

if its a horrible failure ill sand it back and re rattlecan it back to straight satin black
probably should have tried a photoshop mock up first but wheres the fun in that.

end result is not as glossy as i wanted, will leave it for now at least
i had to go with the solid color all the way to the front edge as the fade out idea wasnt going to work with clearcoating the green.
i may try to get the fade out effect by spraying the black back over top.
